As I was walking past the
basketball courts at the park with
swee'pea, I recognized a few of the library kids. Mildly awkward for me....should I say hello, or maybe I'll just nod. Nope, I'll say hello. So of course I said hello. Because I'm that kinda gal. Apparently a great deal more awkward for them. Being recognized by the
librarian: not cool. Mumbled responses from beneath down turned heads. A possible stress induced missed basket. Eeek. Shoulda gone with the nod. Two worlds
colliding and all.

Since I live downtown, I rarely see folks from the library out and about. But every now and then someone will come up to me. Usually younger teens. I really enjoy seeing them and seeing that they are glad to see me. Now I wonder how many kids are hiding when they see me coming.
It's better with the little ones. Several times I've been spotted by frantically-waving kids. I feel like a local celebrity (at least with the preschool set.) Don't worry about the teens, though. I think they act that way around all adults, especially when they are together!
When I worked at Musicland, way back in another life, there was this little sign in the back work/break room telling us the appropriate greeetings for anyone coming into the store. Everyone had to be greeted, they thought people would be less likely to steal if they were acknowledged...You could say, "Hi" "Hello" "How are you today" or a "simple nod of the head." And yes, nod of the head was in quotations. I always opted for "nod of the head" when district managers would visit.
I expect some of those who were embarassed to see you might number among your fans under other circumstances.
